Our Background

We've Seen What Happens When Coverage Gaps Exist at Claim Time.

We did not start our careers in sales. We spent 16 combined years working as claims adjusters and managers. We were the ones reviewing the fine print, explaining exclusions to families, and seeing firsthand where standard policies fail.

That experience changed how we think about insurance. At Stephenson Insurance Agency, we do not just write a policy. We build a financial safety net that has been pressure-tested against real-world claims scenarios.

Immediate Steps

What to Do Right After an Incident

The steps you take in the first 24 hours can shape how your entire claim is handled.

Document Everything

Take clear photos and video of all damage before moving items or starting cleanup. Visual evidence is your strongest asset.

Contact Us Before the Carrier

Call us first. We review your specific policy limits and exclusions so you have a strategy before the first adjuster call.

Understand Your Coverage First

We help you identify sub-limits on items like electronics or jewelry that might not be immediately obvious in your policy documents.

Keep Records of Communication

Note down the names of everyone you speak with at the carrier and keep a log of all claim-related expenses and receipts.

HOW WE HELP

Having a Claims-Experienced Agent Changes the Outcome

  • Reviewing Your Claim We review your claim filing to ensure it accurately reflects your loss and uses the correct terminology to trigger the appropriate coverage.
  • Communicating With Adjusters When a carrier's adjuster has questions, we speak their language. We know how they evaluate damage because we used to be them.
  • Maximizing Your Entitlement We make sure you do not overlook indirect coverages, like additional living expenses or debris removal, that are often left on the table.

What to Expect

What Surprises People About Their Claim

Coverage Gaps

Most homeowners discover exclusions (like water backup or earthquake) only after a claim is denied. We audit these beforehand.

Depreciation Adjustments

Carriers often pay Actual Cash Value instead of replacement cost for older items. We ensure you
understand your policy's valuation methods.

Settlement Timelines

Complex claims take time. We help manage expectations and keep the carrier moving toward a resolution.

The Right Coverage Before the Claim Matters Just as Much

A claim is the moment of truth for your insurance. But that truth is written when your policy is issued. A coverage review now is worth more than a dispute after a loss.

Ashley worked tirelessly to organize a comprehensive but complex insurance package to address our needs, during which the end result is saving us several thousand dollars a year on our auto, home and umbrella policies. She took care of all the changeover logistics from our old carriers to the new.

QUESTIONS WORTH ASKING

Straight Answers About
Filing a Claim

Document everything immediately. Take photos and video of all damage before moving items or starting cleanup. If anyone is injured, call 911. If the incident involves theft or vandalism, file a police report. Then call us before contacting the carrier directly. We review your policy limits, exclusions, and sub-limits so you have a clear picture of your coverage before the first adjuster call. In Washington, your insurer must acknowledge your claim within 10 business days and begin the investigation.

Washington law requires insurers to acknowledge your claim within 10 business days and provide claim forms and assistance within that same window. The carrier must complete its investigation within 30 days unless it cannot reasonably be finished in that time. After receiving your completed proof of loss, the insurer has 15 business days to accept, deny, or request additional time. There is no fixed payment deadline, but payments must be made promptly and within a reasonable time. If your carrier misses these deadlines or acts in bad faith, you can file a complaint with the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

These two valuation methods determine how much you receive after a loss. Replacement Cost pays to replace your damaged property with something of similar kind and quality at current prices. Actual Cash Value pays replacement cost minus depreciation, meaning you receive less for older items. A five-year-old roof paid at ACV could net you significantly less than the cost to replace it. Your policy language determines which method applies. We review every policy for valuation method so there are no surprises at claim time.

Yes, carriers can deny claims for specific reasons: the damage is not covered under your policy, the claim was filed outside the policy's reporting window, or the loss falls under an exclusion (like flood, earthquake, or wear and tear). If your claim is denied, you have the right to a written explanation. You can request an internal appeal with the carrier, hire a licensed public adjuster to negotiate on your behalf, or file a formal complaint with the Washington Office of the Insurance Commissioner. If the denial was unreasonable, Washington law allows you to pursue actual damages plus attorney fees.

It depends on the type and frequency of claims. A single weather-related claim where you are not at fault typically has less impact than an at-fault auto accident. Multiple claims within a three-to-five year window can affect your renewal rate or your eligibility with certain carriers. Before filing, we help you evaluate whether the repair cost justifies a claim relative to your deductible and claims history. If repairs cost only slightly more than your deductible, it may make more financial sense to pay out of pocket.

Yes. In Washington, you have the right to select your own contractor for home repairs and your own body shop for auto repairs. Your insurer may recommend a preferred vendor, but you are not required to use them. For auto repairs, the carrier may specify Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts or aftermarket alternatives. If you request OEM parts, you may need to cover the cost difference. We help you understand your repair rights before work begins.

We review your claim filing to ensure it accurately reflects your loss and uses the right terminology. We communicate directly with the carrier's adjuster because we speak their language. We identify indirect coverages you might overlook, like additional living expenses, debris removal, or loss of use. And we keep the carrier accountable to Washington's claim response timelines. Our 16 years of claims adjusting experience means we know how carriers evaluate damage, and we use that knowledge to advocate for you.
